Pomona Water Issues

Does Pomona Water Have PFAS?

Pomona’s most recent water quality report shows PFOS and PFOA averaging non-detect, but individual source samples ran as high as 18 ppt PFOS and 10 ppt PFOA. In June 2025 the city took one source well offline after its PFOA and PFOS levels exceeded new federal limits of 4 ppt each, which take effect in 2029. Because PFAS levels can vary by source, many residents still choose reverse osmosis or advanced carbon filtration for added protection.

Nitrates in Pomona Water

Pomona’s local groundwater averages 3.5 ppm nitrate (as nitrogen), ranging from 0.49 to 6.8 ppm, according to the most recent water quality report. That’s within the 10 ppm legal limit, but it’s worth knowing about if you have infants or are pregnant.

Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

Pomona’s local groundwater averages 394 ppm TDS (range 240–700), and imported MWD water averages 536 ppm (range 456–617). Both are under the 1,000 ppm secondary standard. Reverse osmosis reduces TDS for better-tasting drinking water.

Fluoride in Pomona Water

Pomona’s local groundwater averages 0.28 ppm fluoride (range 0.22–0.39), and imported MWD water averages 0.7 ppm. Pomona does not add fluoride; its report lists all fluoride results as naturally occurring. All levels are below the 2 ppm state limit.

Water Filter FAQ

We Have Answers!

What is Chromium 6, and can Culligan equipment filter it out?

Pomona’s local groundwater averages 4.8 ppb of hexavalent chromium (Chromium-6), with readings ranging from non-detect to 13 ppb, according to the most recent water quality report. California’s 10 ppb limit applies to Pomona as of October 1, 2026, and the city says it treats affected wells so the water it delivers meets all drinking water standards. Chromium-6 is suspected of being a carcinogen and shouldn’t be ingested above legal limits. We’re not alarmists, but if you’re concerned about the quality of your drinking water, consider a reverse osmosis system. Reverse osmosis is the only readily available system that removes up to 97% of Chromium-6.

What is Reverse Osmosis (R.O.)?

Reverse osmosis is a sophisticated multi-stage filtration system capable of removing up to 97% of the dissolved minerals from your water. It’s designed to make water that’s at least as good as the water you buy in bottles, and often better. This reduces waste in landfills by cutting down on bottled water, which makes reverse osmosis environmentally friendly.

Is Reverse Osmosis water as good as bottled water?

Yes. The Culligan RO system uses multiple processes, including reverse osmosis, to make great tasting, low sodium drinking water. Reverse osmosis removes about 97% of the TDS (total dissolved solids), including salt and sodium, from the water. Read the labels on bottled water and you’ll find reverse osmosis is the same process most bottlers use, so in effect you’re getting “bottled water without the bottle.”

I already have a filter in my refrigerator. Why do I need anything else?

Refrigerator filters are usually just carbon, and while carbon filtered water is better than no treatment at all, it’s limited in what it can remove. Only reverse osmosis can remove dissolved minerals and chemicals like arsenic and hexavalent chromium from your water.

Is filtered water considered purified water?

Filtered water and purified water aren’t the same thing. Filtered water may still contain minerals or other dissolved solids while having been purged of sediment, chlorine, and other contaminants. Purified water may have been deionized or distilled to reach the highest level of purity. Culligan’s reverse osmosis systems remove 99% of all contaminants, though your water may still contain trace minerals.

Is a reverse osmosis filter an ion exchange filter?

Ion exchange filters differ from reverse osmosis filters. RO filters use a semi-permeable membrane that helps remove contaminants, including bacteria, viruses, chlorine, and other dissolved solids. Ion exchange filters work with a resin bed in Culligan water softeners. They remove minerals such as magnesium or calcium and replace them with sodium or potassium ions.

Does reverse osmosis remove lead?

Reverse osmosis is an effective method for removing lead. If your home’s piping may have lead fixtures, or you’re concerned about lead in Pomona’s water supply, schedule a free water test today.

Does reverse osmosis remove chlorine?

Reverse osmosis is effective at removing chlorine from water. Chlorine is added to municipal water systems to disinfect against germs and contamination, but it can alter the taste and odor of tap water. Many people find this unpleasant, and reverse osmosis takes care of it.

Are you able to rent a Culligan reverse osmosis filter?

Yes, you can rent a Culligan reverse osmosis filter system. See the Reverse Osmosis Rental section below for details.

What is the best water filter for nitrate reduction?

A reverse osmosis system is effective at treating and removing nitrates. Pomona’s local groundwater averages 3.5 ppm nitrate and has tested as high as 6.8 ppm. Results vary depending on your water’s nitrate levels, so get your water tested by a Culligan expert to determine if a standard RO filter will work or if a more advanced filter is needed.

How long does an RO filter last?

Culligan recommends replacing your pre-filters and post-filters at least once a year, depending on usage. The membrane filter, which is the main filter in your system, may last longer. Culligan offers RO filter maintenance services so you don’t have to worry about it. Set a schedule that suits your needs and enjoy the best tasting water!

What is the installation time for Culligan reverse osmosis filters?

An RO filter can be installed within one day for a standard under-sink household application connecting the system to your water source and faucet. Proper calibration matters, so don’t try to install a Culligan reverse osmosis system without a licensed expert.

Why Choose Reverse Osmosis Systems For Your Pomona Home?

Our water filters are second to none. But the real secret: We make water treatment easy.

  1. Expert Installation. Easy To Use.

Culligan has been in the water treatment service business for more than 85 years, and it’s all we do. Your local Culligan delivers, installs and maintains your reverse osmosis filtration system for you, so you don’t have to! No worries about shipping damage, unboxing, or installation location. We also offer maintenance and filter changes annually.

  2. Unmatched Performance + Custom Solutions.

How many water filters have you been through over the years? Many off-the-shelf filters only reduce the most common impurities in the Pomona area, such as chlorine. Culligan’s drinking water systems address the unique content of your water, filtering 99% of all water contaminants at less cost, with unmatched durability and less hassle over the course of the product lifecycle.

  3. Why Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Filters Over Pitcher/Faucet Mount Styles?

RO filters are one of the most reliable methods of eliminating drinking water contaminants that can be harmful to your health. These are pervasive in many water supplies across the country and include lead, PFAS, arsenic, hexavalent chromium, volatile organic compounds, and other emerging problems that store-bought filters will not remove.

  4. Why Price Tags Are Deceptive

Unless you were an expert installer, you wouldn’t buy a water heater directly off Amazon. However, big box retailers, both in-store and online, take this transactional approach to homeowners for reverse osmosis water filters. They offer you low price tags for incentive. But what they don’t tell you about are the installation hassle, the third-party customer service on both ends, and how you’re left to your own devices to maintain your system, and don’t forget, your home is unique. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. If you want to save throughout the life of your system, go with the expert!
