How Hard Is Santa Monica’s Water?
Santa Monica’s tap water is moderately hard. Most homes receive water from the Arcadia Treatment Plant, which the city’s most recent water quality report shows averaging 106 ppm, or about 6 grains per gallon, after reverse osmosis softening. Imported MWD water blended into the supply runs harder at about 270 ppm (roughly 16 gpg). Whole house filtration paired with a softener addresses both scale and water quality at once.
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Water from the Arcadia Treatment Plant, which serves most Santa Monica homes, averages 182 ppm TDS (range 137–210). Imported MWD water runs higher, at about 306 to 632 ppm depending on the treatment plant, and the Santa Monica Well #1 source has measured 947 ppm before blending. Higher TDS can affect taste and appliance performance.
What Is The Water Quality of the Santa Monica Region?
Santa Monica draws up to 75% of its water from local groundwater, treated at the Arcadia Treatment Plant, and buys the rest, about 25%, from the Metropolitan Water District. The most recent water quality report found trace hexavalent chromium (0.1 ppb at the Arcadia plant) and nitrate (averaging 0.2 ppm), both within regulatory limits. Arsenic and PFAS were not detected.

Whole house water filters usually cost more than reverse osmosis systems for a couple of reasons. An RO system only filters water at one tap, while a whole home filter operates as a water system throughout your home. Likewise, custom options to filter major issues such as hardness and TDS aren’t applicable to a reverse osmosis system. Think of an RO system handling your drinking water at one tap, while a whole house filter provides solutions for water problems throughout your home.
Do Whole House Water Filters Soften Water?
Whole house systems are designed to reduce sediment, chlorine, and other contaminants, leaving you with cleaner, safer, fresher-tasting water. Based on the makeup of your water, Culligan may recommend a combination of whole-house filtration and water softening. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium, present in Santa Monica’s hard water, can decrease the effectiveness of a whole house filter on its own, which is why your Culligan expert may suggest pairing it with a softener.
Do Whole House Water Filters Reduce Water Pressure?
